Cinnamon is actually one of the oldest spices known to man and has been used for thousands of years for medicinal purposes. And while this tasty treat is one of the most common spices in the world today, there was a time when it was extremely rare, highly sought after, and ridiculously expensive.
Its uses and health benefits have been documented as far back as 2300 BC, throughout China, Europe, and Egypt. Back then, people traveled halfway around the world and fought ’til death to get their hands on this treasured treat.
Ancient Chinese medicine men revered cinnamon as a super spice and used it to treat colds, indigestion, and pain. The Egyptians used cinnamon as a perfuming agent during the embalming process, and it was even written about in the Old Testament as an ingredient in anointing oil. Back before there were refrigerators, people used cinnamon as a way to mask the smell and flavor of spoiled meats. And since cinnamon contains phenols (organic compounds that prohibit the growth of bacteria) it was the perfect natural food preservative.
And with all its magical powers, no wonder this savory spice was so coveted and costly.
Where does cinnamon come from?
Cinnamon is actually the inner dried bark of an evergreen tree that belongs to the laurel family. It is native to Sri Lanka, Burma, and the southern coastal strip of India, but is now grown all across Asia as well as South and Central America.
The trees are first harvested when they’re three years old, one year after their first major pruning. Harvesting season occurs twice a year, immediately following the rainy seasons when high humidity makes it easy to peel the bark. The farmers slice off the outer bark of the tree to get to the good stuff, then they shave off the potent cinnamon layer and lay it out to dry. As it dries, it naturally curls up into quills that are cut into sticks, or crushed into a fine powder—which we then put into Shakeology.
